Winter worries for the car industry’s financial predicament

21 November 2011

The winter months are never kind to the UK’s car industry, but with the looming threat of a double-dip recession, the Eurozone crisis and the constant violence in the uprising countries of Africa and the middle-east, it seems our car industry is going to struggle in the coming weeks.

The UK boss of MINI and BMW, Tim Abbot, has spoken of his fears that the industry could hit rock bottom during winter: "We're in for the toughest winter yet," he said.

"The market will bottom out. The retail share is down a huge amount with only fleet sales staying buoyant.

"We all thought 2011 would be tough to begin with then get better in the second half. In fact the opposite has been true - the first half was strong but it's really fallen away. There's no doubt things will be tough going forwards."

Strong words indeed Abbot, but will we see a situation like we saw in 2009 when some companies, like Honda, halt production? Will it really get that bad? Let’s hope not and pray that people buy some new cars and help boost the economy.
